About Kutná Hora

Kutná Hora is one of the Czech Republic's most remarkable and most visited UNESCO World Heritage sites — a medieval silver-mining town approximately 80 kilometres east of Prague whose wealth in the 13th and 14th centuries rivalled that of Paris and made it briefly the second most important city in the Bohemian Kingdom. What remains today is an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval townscape, two iconic Gothic monuments, and the most famous ossuary in the world.

The Sedlec Ossuary — the Church of Bones — is the site most visitors come to see. Decorated with the bones of approximately 40,000 people arranged into chandeliers, coats of arms, and garlands, it is one of the most extraordinary and singular interiors in Europe. A short walk away, the Cathedral of St Barbara — a UNESCO-listed Gothic masterpiece begun in 1388 and rivalling Prague's St Vitus in ambition — is less visited and arguably more impressive. The medieval town centre, the Vlašský dvůr (Italian Court), and the surrounding landscape complete a destination that rewards a full half-day or more.
